"On my property in Tasmania I run about 100 head of cattle. It was difficult to get good animal handling equipment for my cattle and impossible to get it at a reasonable price. You know the equipment I am talking about, cattle panels, crushes, races, ramps, sheep and horse gear etc.
A guy I work with had made similar products years before in Wagga Wagga but was caught with Workers Compensation Insurance and high Electricity and employees always being sick. He closed his business. With this in mind I took off to China and proceeded to set up a small factory to make panels. Everyone thought I was mad. Just 8 guys cutting tube and welding and that leap of faith worked and the factory took off. Today we have over 120 workers in our China factory producing great animal handling equipment. Some of our staff are Australians to ensure the quality. Products are shipped by containers worldwide selling direct to farm stores.
The best was when I sent a couple of containers to my property in Tasmania. I needed to use some of it for my own cattle but I was going to give the Farm Stores in my area a run for their money. We all knew they had been charging too much for years and most were buying from China but they did not have the advantage of being in control of the factory, quality and designs. The first thing I did after receiving my first two containers was book in to our local field day. Gee, was that the right move. Just from that show I got orders right then on the spot for over $60,000 and the knock on from it was another $100,000 in subsequent sales. Since then I have not looked back. In the last year I have brought in 2 containers a month. I call my local Business Brazzen Tasrural. I reckon I am the biggest supplier in Tasmania now and I even supply to a chain of farm stores who were my competition.
I dont have high overheads, I operate from my own land and it is not even close to any main road. My office is a container and I store all my smaller parts in another container. Farmers are happy to come from everywhere to get value for their money and a better product.
Since I started 4 years ago we decided to move away from selling to stores and have a similar model to what I have in Tasmania. Now we have Dealers all over Australia and it has changed many Australian lives and has given farmers a great product at a reasonable price. Each Dealer has an exclusive area and some have never had experience in farm equipment before but they have a property to work from and the will to succeed. We have dealers from Cairns down to Vic and even over to WA.
